Bamboo is made mostly into rayon by way of the viscose process and while there are other ways to make it into fabric, rayon isn’t the same as cotton and has at least as many if not more downsides than conventionally grown cotton does. You read that bamboo is sustainable, as it needs no fertilizer or pesticides and that is all true but there is most unfortunately next to no data available on how much water it needs as a crop and thus no way to know if it needs more or less water than cotton does.
Tencel often gets raw material from sustainably farmed eucalyptus trees and was given a prestigious European award “European Award for the Environment”. Lyocell processing can utilize bamboo for raw material too and that fabric is branded Monocel. It’s not widely used yet but you can keep an eye out for it. Tencel isn’t all that widely used either but is becoming more commonplace so watch for it too. If the fabric does not say it is Monocel or Tencel, be assured it was made by the viscose process and doesn’t merit all that environmental goodygoody reputation that’s being pushed for it in ads. One other friendly method of making fabric from bamboo produces a somewhat coarse, linenlike fabric. It requires combing out the fibres and then spinning them into yarn to be woven into what is typically referred to as ‘bamboo linen’. It’s extremely labour intensive and naturally that makes it very costly and it’s not soft and silky like rayons are.
